Return Service Requested
In compliance with United States Postal Service regulations, "Address Correction Requested" is not a valid service request and has been changed.
This has been changed to RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED. This instructs the postal carrier to return the statement to you, with the forwarding address (if any) attached as a yellow label. This gives you the ability to identify and change the patient's address ASAP. The mail is returned to you at no additional charge. The default, "FORWARDING SERVICE REQUESTED" is equivalent to not specifying fowarding instructions at all. In this case, the mail will be forwarded to the forwarding address on file for up to the statutory 1 year length of a mail forwarding order without notifying you that the mail has been forwarded. In this case, you would not know the actual address of the patient and after one year, the mail would be returned to you as "FORWARDING ORDER EXPIRED".
If printing envelopes or using a rubber stamp on envelopes, there are three instructions available for the postal worker. (Note that the postal worker is not obligated to follow your instructions for First Class mail, but if it is plainly posted on the envelope your instructions are generally followed.)
FORWARDING SERVICE REQUESTED: This is the default if no instruction is printed, at no additional fee.
RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED: This is the option for the mail to be returned to you with notification of the forwarding address, at no additional fee.
ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED: This is the option for the mail to be forwarded if there is an active forwarding address on file, but additionally, an electronically or handwritten forwarding notification is sent back to you for an additional postage due fee, ranging up to 70 cents.
